Rebecca Young, PhD
Rehabilitation Psychologist
Dr. Rebecca Young is Iñupiaq and Cuban American, a mother, a partner, a berry picker, a gardener, and a seamstress. After working in primary care and pediatric outpatient settings as a behavioral health consultant for many years, she saw a need for rehabilitation psychology services in Alaska. She returned to graduate school and earned her doctorate in clinical-community psychology from UAA. Dr. Young completed two years of rehabilitation psychology training at the University of Washington (UW) with the Department of Rehabilitation Medicine. While at UW, she provided rehabilitation psychology services for patients in intensive, acute, and inpatient rehabilitation care, as well as outpatient rehabilitation. Her training also included providing psychological testing at the UWMC MS Center and the UWMC Alvord Brain Tumor Center. Additionally, Dr. Young treated patients in the burn, pediatric, and consultation liaison services.Dr. Young offers psychological testing for people who have acquired traumatic brain injuries and those with non-traumatic brain injuries, including stroke, brain tumors, and cognitive changes due to a medical condition (e.g, autoimmune disease, vascular disease, cancer/cancer treatments, organ transplantation). In addition to psychological testing, she offers cognitive rehabilitation interventions to support meaningful health and behavior change, as well as improved quality of life, for individuals adjusting to physical and cognitive changes.
For Patients:
Psychological testing may be beneficial for individuals experiencing cognitive changes that significantly impact their ability to navigate daily life tasks. Cognitive changes may be related to a medical condition, an acquired traumatic brain injury, or a non-traumatic brain injury (e.g., stroke, brain tumors, brain infection, toxin exposure).
Referrals from medical providers are required for psychological testing associated with a medical condition. Please talk about your concerns with your primary care provider or medical specialist to explore the potential benefits of cognitive testing.
Rehabilitation psychotherapy may be helpful for patients coping with stress related to a medical condition(s). Psychotherapy can assist with meaningful health + behavior change, developing coping strategies, and processing trauma related to a medical condition or event.
